What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is word coined from two ancient Greek words and literally means “done by hand.” It is a hundred-year-old healing art that has continued to gain respect among the wider medical community and generate renewed interest in the basic principles of how our bodies work.

Chiropractic touches the very basis of our physical lives by correcting misalignment in that very vital part of our nervous system and musculoskeletal structure: the spine. Our spines do more than hold us up—they encase and protect the cord of nerves that is the pathway of communication between our brains and the various parts of our bodies. Every function of our bodies is controlled by electrical impulses sent from the brain through twenty-nine pairs of nerves extending outward from the individual sections of the spine, called vertebrae.

Vertebral Subluxations and Pinched Nerves

Picture what kind of abuse our spines take in daily life from accidents, falls, improper lifting of heavy objects, or bad posture. Even using the same muscles over and over again can cause undue stress on joints, especially those joints in our spines where the vertebrae meet one another. Such stress often causes the vertebrae to get knocked out of place, or misaligned. The misalignments can be serious, as in the case of someone with severe scoliosis, or they might be subtle and go unnoticed. These misalignments chiropractors call subluxations.

It is easy to predict what can happen if a part of the spine is even a little out of place. If anything is pinching, stretching, or putting too much pressure on a nerve, it can cause complications (literally “dis-ease”) for whatever organs or tissues in the body that nerve runs to. In the spine, a misalignment of the vertebrae can cause anywhere from a little discomfort to extreme radiating pain. We believe it could be a root cause of almost any sickness.

The Best Kind of Physical Therapy Program

Chiropractic intervenes in a non-invasive way to get the body’s communication system back on track. Though we use X-rays and other current technology to aid in diagnosis and treatment, most true chiropractic adjustment depends not so much on instruments as a keen eye and an intelligent hand. Our doctors can look at you and tell if you are suffering from bad posture, and feel out subluxations with a trained sense of touch.

Visualize undergoing a spinal adjustment: the patient enjoys freeing sensations in his/her back as the chiropractor massages, stretches, bends, and applies gentle thrusts to areas of subluxation in the spine. Imagine the pleasurable sensations of stretching after sleeping in on a lazy Saturday. Now imagine this taken to a new level as a trained chiropractor brings each stray vertebra back into its proper position, sometimes with the audible release of nitrogen gas.

The Blessed Results of Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic patients, after a spinal adjustment, have testified to relief from headaches, neck and back pain, sciatica, ear infections, infertility, constipation, and in some younger patients, bedwetting. This writer knows someone personally who testifies to instant relief from a stomachache through a spinal adjustment! Many illnesses have been corrected through spinal adjustment by patients wanting to avoid the undesirable secondary effects of drugs and surgery. Chiropractic is simply an external, hands-on approach to bringing your body back into normal communication with itself. We don’t just treat the symptom, we solve the problem.
